Q: How did the Internet begin?

The Internet began as a U.S. Department of Defense Network called "ARPAnet" in 1969 with funding from the U.S. Defence Advanced Research Project Agency or "DARPA".

Thru ARPAnet, computers from distant locations talked to each other by putting data into "electronic envelopes" and then sending it to the "electronic address" of the other computer.This method of packaging and shipping electronic information become known as the Internet Protocol or "IP".

If two computers were on the ARPAnet and had the software for implementing IP they could communicate.The "IP" protocol evolved into "TCP/IP" protocol.

The success of the ARPAnet eventually led to the spinoff of other networks such as the;

CSNET -1979 (Computer Science Network)
MILNET-1983 (US Military Network)
NSFNET-1985 (NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION NETWORK)

These networks, primarily, the NFSNET grew to become the Internet as we know of it today with all communication based on "TCP/IP" protocol from ARPANET.
